Acts which Break or do not Break the Fast
There are some acts which invalidate the fast and some which do not break the fast. The following is a compilation of some of the common acts which invalidate or do not invalidate the fast. These are taken primarily from Behashti Zewar (Heavenly Ornaments) [English - Urdu] unless mentioned otherwise.
Fell Ill During Fast and Took Medicine
Question: A person started his fast and then fell ill. His condition became really serious but although there was no fear of death occuring, the doctor gave him medicine. Will this person receive a sin for taking the medicine? And is only Qadha obligatory on him or Kaffarah as well?
Delaying the Salah in Jama'ah because of Preparing Meals
Question: To attain rewards, many people in our area arrange for Naan, meat, Kichra, Pulao, Kari, gravies and other types of food to be fed in the Masjid. This however leads to an eight to ten minute delay in the Maghrib salah. Someone has mentioned that rather than earning rewards, the people are responsible for committing a sin because they are delaying the salah. He says that this program should therefore be called off. The food that the poor were therefore receiving in the name of Iftar has stopped. Is it really a sin to delay the salah by ten minutes?

Missing Fasts because of Studies
Question: We are students studying at college and fasting is Fardh for us. Although we have the strength to fast, it affects our studies because our classes take place from eleven in the morning to six in the evening. Furthermore, we are writing our qualifying exams in a months time and the only time we have to prepare for it is the hold month of Ramadan. Failing these exams would be tremendous loss to us. Can we miss the fasts of Ramadan with the intention of repeating them afterwards?
The Wisdom Behind Fasting and Its Benefits
There are innumerable reasons and benefits of fasting. One of the most promenent is habituating oneself with controlling the carnal self. One thereby restrains one's innate desires, as a result of which those good deeds that are normally difficult to carry out become easier. One therefore is able to forsake sin and develops the qualities of piety and abstinence.
To Eat Intentionally After Unintentional Eating and Masturbation During Fast
Question: Someone eats unintentionally during fast afterwhich he thinks the fast stands invalidated. As a result now he eats intentionally, will he need to just make up Qadha or is Kaffarah also necessary? By this would masturbation with hand intentionally entail only Qadha or Kaffarah would apply?
